My 2017 Spring Capsule Wardrobe

February 28, 2017

IT’S HERE! Today I’m so excited to reveal to you my 2017 spring capsule wardrobe! (Check out my last post on how to build a capsule wardrobe if you wanna know what the heck I’m talking about.) I ended up with a total of 32 items, which I broke down by category below.

I hope this gives you a better idea of what a capsule wardrobe looks like in real life so you can put one together for yourself! And don’t forget, each person’s capsule will be different since everyone’s life and style are different. Don’t worry if yours looks nothing like mine because it should be tailored to you!

My 2017 spring capsule wardrobe

As I mentioned in my last post, I made a conscious choice not to buy any new clothes this season. I have plenty of clothes I’m comfortable in, that fit, and that I like, so I’m sure I’ll be fine for the next three months (even if I’m itching for some retail therapy). I think it’ll be a fun challenge to not go clothes shopping for awhile!

A lot of these items were pulled out after being put away during the fall and winter months. In exchange I put some warmer flannels, sweaters, jackets, pants, and boots away until fall and winter come back around.

The funny thing is, I had no intention of color coordinating these clothes when I was organizing my capsule. But clearly I have some favorite colors and patterns, which I didn’t even fully realize until I took these pictures and looked through them. 😂 Let the spring capsule wardrobe challenge begin!

Tops (13)

Do you see a theme with these shirts? Ha! I love how black, white, and grey are neutral colors that work with anything. And stripes just make me happy! I’m all about loose fitting shirts that look cute but still feel like a t-shirt. Before I tried a capsule for the first time, I used to wear a ton of t-shirts. As in boxy, t-shirt t-shirts (like U of A tees that I now just save for games/around the house)! I think that’s all I felt comfortable in before I realized that there’s cuter options out there besides just tight, form-fitting shirts, that are actually comfy!

The next two tops are a little dressier than my striped casual shirts (but still as comfy as t-shirts) and add a pop of my favorite colors! Then the next two are 3/4 sleeved, perfect for spring, and once again neutrals that can be dressed up or down.

I also included three button-down shirts, with of course more stripes and pops of cheery colors! I love that they’re a more loose-fitted and relaxed fit. The one in the middle below is a warmer flannel and the other two are more light and airy fabrics, perfect for the warmer weather in spring.

Bottoms (7)

Last summer I bought all new shorts because the pairs I had were old, outdated, faded, falling apart, etc. (Like I bought them after I graduated high school….in 2011.) I love American Eagle shorts but I made the mistake of buying 3 pairs of high-waisted ones (bleached, dark wash, and white) and didn’t realize how super short they are.

Luckily they’re double rolled so I can just unfold them once and have a little more length. I also got one pair of mid-rise, mid-length shorts (bottom left), and I feel SO much more comfortable in them. They’re my fave!

I kept three pairs of jeans in three different colors/styles for my spring capsule, so I can mix and match to create more outfits. I put my other pants away because I know I won’t wear them very often now that it’s warm enough for shorts.

Dresses & overalls (3)

Let’s just be honest – I wish I was a dress-wearer, but I’m just not. A lot of my friends wear dresses all the time, and somehow pull off the casual, not-even-trying-but-still-look-girly-and-adorable style so easily. It’s just not what I’m comfortable in! But these two dresses are casual and fit my style well, so I wanna try and integrate them into my day-to-day wear. We’ll see if I become a regular dress-wearer yet!

Now about these overalls: I have mixed emotions. They were SO cute when I found them at Forever 21 and I couldn’t pass them up! But they have a baggy “boyfriend jean” style and make my legs look kinda short. I decided to include them in my capsule wardrobe to give them another chance, so we’ll see how much wear they get! If I don’t like them I’ll definitely be on the hunt for a more perfect pair of overalls in the future.

Outerwear (2)

I put most of my warmer clothes away for the season, but I kept a couple of jackets & sweaters out for when it’s still cool outside. My denim jacket didn’t get much wear during winter because it’s smaller and doesn’t layer well over long sleeves. But it’s perfect with short sleeves, so I can enjoy it a lot more during spring! And of course, my trusty cardigan – it’s so cozy and simple and goes with everything.

Shoes (7)

As far as shoes go, I’m keeping it pretty casual like everything else. I love my Chacos and (fake) Birks for everyday, and my gladiator sandals for when I want to dress it up a little more. I also have a pair of pointed flats, which I bought for work, but I think they’re also great for every day.

Converse and Sperrys are my go-to’s when it comes to closed-toed shoes. My Sperrys are old and a little beat up, but they’re one of the comfiest pairs of shoes I’ve ever owned! I mostly wear my Nikes for working out, but I also like to throw them on when I’m just running errands or will be on my feet a lot.

A few exceptions

There’s a few things I didn’t include in my capsule because they’re rarely needed, but I might still wear for specific occasions: rain boots, heels/wedges (which basically don’t see the light of day unless I have some fancy interview or wedding to attend), and clothes I only wear to work (khakis, black slacks, a black cardigan, black flats… boring stuff). I do have a lot of friends getting married this spring and summer, so there’s a chance I’ll pull out some other dressier dresses or maybe even go shopping for something new to wear. We’ll see!

So… you in?

So what do you think? Wanna join me and try a spring capsule wardrobe? Don’t worry, you totally still have time! After a few days of brainstorming, it only took me one afternoon to clean out my closet and get everything organized. And you don’t have to start on any specific day. Remember, there are no rules! If you’re on the fence about it, I’d say (in my Shia LaBouf voice) JUST DO IT!!! I promise you’ll learn something new and enjoy it.

Share your spring capsule wardrobe and outfits you create on Instagram using the hashtag #simplespringcapsule, so we can share ideas and inspire each other! Can’t wait to see how it goes for both of us!

Xo,

Becka
